According to Aparna S. Sharma, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Fertilizers, global urea prices have surged from USD 447/tonne in February to USD 947/tonne currently.
India has secured 2.5 million tonnes of urea and 5 million tonnes of DAP from suppliers outside the Strait of Hormuz, with shipments expected between June and July. The price details of the latest urea tender have not yet been disclosed.
During the West Asia crisis, India’s domestic fertilizer production reached 10.48 million tonnes, while imports totaled 2.76 million tonnes, bringing total supply to about 13.24 million tonnes. Meanwhile, the government has slightly lowered fertilizer demand estimates for the 2026–27 kharif season due to the El Niño outlook. Urea demand is projected at 19.4 million tonnes, while DAP demand is estimated at 6 million tonnes.
Summer sowing has started in parts of India, particularly for short-duration crops such as pulses, coarse grains, and cotton in regions receiving pre-monsoon rainfall.
